RSS is a data format for the exchange of news items. RSS is establishing more and more on the internet. RSS feeds do allow to read news from a website, without opening the website in a web browser. Therefor several types of readers can be downloaded from the internet as freeware. Those readers are managing periodical downloads of new news items and displaying them.
